I absolutely loved this book. So much in fact that I’ve already re-read it at least a couple of times. This is the second Meg Harding book that I’ve read, and it definitely won’t be the last. I love her writing style and it’s very clean. Not only in editing, but the plot is solid and there really wasn’t anything I could think of that she could have added.
The main character, Jake, was definitely a favorite, as it should be. Despite having paid others to do all the work, he isn’t afraid to get his hands dirty. In spite of having more than his share of mishaps, he refuses to give up. He tried so hard, and at times he seemed like a walking disaster, but that just endeared him to me that much more.
The second main character, Dakota, has the patience of a saint.Despite all of Jake’s mishaps, Dakota keeps teaching him more. I think most people in Dakota’s shoes would have put an end to it from almost the beginning, but not Dakota. In fact, some of the minor characters in the book seemed to think he was nuts, but he simply brushed it off and kept on going.
Overall, this was a very enjoyable read which showcases the strengths of the author. Once I started reading, I couldn’t put it down. Luckily it’s short enough that I could read it in one sitting, though I think that would have even happened if it was longer. One line really stuck out for me and really became my favorite:
“I didn’t think you were trying to kill me.” ….. “I just thought you were really clumsy. Inept and murderous never crossed my mind.”
Want to find out more? This is definitely a story I would recommend. If you’re anything like me, you’ll be reading it over and over again.
